ADOC & ARAMARK LAUNCH ICARE PROGRAM AT FIVE FACILITIES

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) transitioned its food services to Aramark Correctional Services in December of 2025. After the initial transition, ADOC and Aramark were able to start implementing some innovative programming. The Micro Markets, specially installed food service kiosks for ADOC staff, have now been installed at Bibb and St. Clair Correctional Facilities with four more in development for Tutwiler, Limestone, Ventress, and Fountain. There will also be one at the Governor Kay Ivey Correctional Complex.
The iCare Fresh program allows approved family and friends to purchase freshly prepared restaurant meals to be delivered to inmates. It is an incentive-based program that rewards good behavior, builds inmate self-worth, and thereby enhances security. To be eligible, ADOC inmates must not have any disciplinary infractions for the last six months and not be in any restricted housing. Currently this program is implemented at Red Eagle, St. Clair, Bibb, Kilby, and Tutwiler with five more in development at Fountain, Limestone, Ventress, Easterling, and Donaldson. As ADOC evaluates the program, more facilities will be considered.
Students in the IN2Work program support the iCare Fresh program by applying the skills they’ve learned including cooking techniques, proper use of equipment, short order cooking skills, customer service techniques, and food safety. IN2Work is a four-month class with three phases: Kitchen Basics, Food Service Management, and ServeSafe certification. The program teaches incarcerated students how to function in a workplace setting and work as a team. Currently, there are 34 inmates enrolled in the inaugural IN2Work class, which is set to graduate in October. There are 40 inmates enrolled in the second class that will graduate in November. The selection process is underway for the third class that will tentatively graduate in December.
Aramark believes in second-chance employment and is committed to hiring IN2WORK graduates after release.
