MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is launching a Tobacco Free Initiative for all its Correctional Facilities. The initiative, affecting both staff and inmates, will be rolled out in phases. Of course, the new Governor Kay Ivey Correctional Complex will also be tobacco free.
Phase 1 will include Elmore, Frank Lee, Kilby, and Staton. ADOC Canteens will stop selling tobacco products on September 1, 2026. They will, however, sell NicoDerm Patches, and Zyne Pouches to aid in tobacco cessation efforts. After October 1, 2026, all tobacco products and accessories will be considered contraband.
To assist those who may need help with quitting, ADOC Psychological Associates are being trained to lead Tobacco Cessation Classes at all facilities.
A tobacco-free policy inside Alabama’s correctional facilities will offer many health and safety benefits including the reduction of secondhand smoke exposure, the improvement of respiratory health, and a decrease in the risk of cardiovascular disease. There are also operational benefits like better working conditions for staff, reduced fire hazards, a reduction in smoking-related maintenance issues and medical costs.
