The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) has made significant progress over the past week as it endeavors to decommission the main facility at Holman Correctional Facility (Holman). As of 12 p.m. on March 2, 2020, approximately 84% of Holman’s general and restrictive housing populations have been safely transferred to other facilities within Alabama’s correctional system. Following the successful relocation of all remaining general and restrictive housing inmates, Holman’s death row population will be moved out of the main facility to Holman’s Restrictive Housing Unit (RHU). This movement will not occur until all necessary RHU modifications currently in progress have been completed.
The utility systems located within the Holman tunnel remain operational, and no monitored power shutdowns were required to perform maintenance over the past week. We attribute this good news to the successful installation of additional sump pumps, which have helped reduce water and moisture concerns in the tunnel as well as the reduced strain placed on these systems by a much lower inmate population.
Staffing and resourcing needs continue to be evaluated and addressed as Holman’s inmate population level decreases. The ADOC also continues to make appropriate modifications and security enhancements to receiving institutions.
