Four weeks after announcing its plans to decommission the main facility at Holman Correctional Facility, the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) approximates Phase 2 of this process to be halfway complete – with 50% of Holman’s general and restrictive housing populations relocated as of 12 p.m. on February 24. The remaining inmate populations housed in the main facility will continue to be relocated at a safe rate over the coming weeks.
The utility systems located within the Holman tunnel remain operational, following a safely completed maintenance outage on February 20. The installation of additional sump pumps referenced in Strategic Updates Two and Three has been completed as of February 21, and as a result we anticipate an ongoing reduction in the frequency of necessary maintenance outages moving forward. The ADOC continues to carefully evaluate all conditions within the tunnel prior to entry, and medical personnel remain on standby while required maintenance is performed.
As the Holman inmate population continues to decrease, staffing and resourcing needs will continue to be proactively considered and addressed. The ADOC also continues to make security enhancements to receiving institutions.
