The Alabama Dept. of Corrections operates 29 facilities within the state. Five are considered maximum security: Holman, Kilby, St. Clair, Donaldson and Tutwiler. Eleven are considered medium security, with a total of 13 minimum camps, work release and community work centers. Back to top.

Alabama inmates may receive correspondence through the U.S. mail. Inmates are allowed to correspond by letter with family members and friends unless the mail privilege is withdrawn as a result of approved disciplinary action. Mail between inmates, whether state, county, city, out-of-state or federal, may be allowed only with the permission of the facility wardens. All incoming mail must be addressed so as to specify the inmate’s name, inmate number, and location within the institution. Additional items included in correspondence may be cause for mail rejection. Items such as food, clothing, jewelry, and toiletries may not be mailed to offenders.
