The Alabama Dept. of Corrections operates 29 facilities within the state. Five are considered maximum security: Holman, Kilby, St. Clair, Donaldson and Tutwiler. Eleven are considered medium security, with a total of 13 minimum camps, work release and community work centers. Back to top.

Alabama inmates may receive correspondence through the U.S. mail. Inmates are allowed to correspond by letter with family members and friends unless the mail privilege is withdrawn as a result of approved disciplinary action. Mail between inmates, whether state, county, city, out-of-state or federal, may be allowed only with the permission of the facility wardens. All incoming mail must be addressed so as to specify the inmate’s name, inmate number, and location within the institution. Additional items included in correspondence may be cause for mail rejection. Items such as food, clothing, jewelry, and toiletries may not be mailed to offenders. On June 30, 2010, 43.7% of Alabama's prison population was sentenced for personal crimes (crimes against persons). 27.6% were sentenced for property crimes and 28.6% for drugs and other crimes. During Fiscal Year 2009, the annual cost to house an ADOC inmate was $15,118.30 or $41.42 per day. According to the American Correctional Association this is one of the lowest cost-per-day rates in the country. Back to top.

Lethal injection is the primary method of execution in Alabama. In 2002, the passage of Senate bill 240 provides for execution of the death sentence by lethal injection unless the condemned person elects the method of electrocution as described by Code of Alabama 15-18-82.1.Back to top.

Effective October 1, 2008 the annual salary range for a Correctional Officer Trainee is $28,516 - $43,339.
** $29,954 for new employees with an Associate Degree
